The MWMN offers a number of training activities to its members to strengthen their knowledge and skills, providing in depth analysis, in the field of mediation and on the “Women, Peace and Security” agenda. These include both de visu trainings and remote learning experiences.
The MWMN is actively engaged in the promotion of women in the context of conflict mediation and on the advancement of women’s meaningful and effective participation in peace processes. This is done through the participation to international calls and campaigns while also conducting specific advocacy activities in the Mediterranean Region.
Local Antennas
The MWMN’s Secretariat works in close collaboration with its members to develop activities not only at the regional, but also at the local level within the individual countries in the Mediterranean area.
Throughout the years, this collaboration has led to groups of members from specific countries to develop an interest in strengthening the Network at the local level to be able to promote its activity and further its objectives in their countries. This has been further developed through the establishment of local antennas, where the MWMN members conduct activities in the field of mediation and related to the role of women in peace building at the local level.
Synergies and Experience Sharing
The MWMN is part of a large international community of practice focusing on the role of women in mediation and on the implementation of UN SCR 1325 (2000) and related resolutions composed of other existing networks, thinks tanks, international and regional organizations and civil society groups. It fosters relations with these actors to explore synergies and is present at workshops and conferences contributing to the discussions and debates aimed at identifying best practices in the field.
On January 2017, Italy joined the UN Security Council as non-permanent member, with the aim of enhancing its contribution to the effort of “building peace for tomorrow.” A key component of Italy’s commitment is to strengthen the role of women as drivers of peace across the whole conflict cycle.
Acknowledging the need to foster women’s participation in a key region for global peace and stability, Italy decided to establish a Mediterranean Women Mediators Network.
This is one of the flagship initiatives of the Italian mandate on the Security Council and combines Italy’s role in the Mediterranean area, its commitment to the peaceful resolution of conflicts and to the promotion of gender equality policies. The establishment of the MWNM was also included in Italy’s III National Action Plan (NAP) on Women, Peace and Security for the 2016-2019 period. Italy has renewed its commitment towards the Network in the IV NAP on Women, Peace and Security for the 2020-2024 period.
This initiative is promoted by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in collaboration with Istituto Affari Internazionali (IAI) and Women in International Security (WIIS) Italy.
The Mediterranean Women Mediators Network (MWMN) was launched in Rome on October 26, 2017 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation at the presence of the Hon. Minister Angelino Alfano. A multigenerational group of approximately 40 women mediators and experts on mediation from the four shores of the Mediterranean Sea came together and agreed on the adoption of the “Founding Principles and Declaration of Intent” of the Network.
Since the foundational event, the Mediterranean Women Mediators Network has grown welcoming new members and has conducted numerous activities ranging from physical and long distance trainings, peer to peer exchanges, advocacy and outreach campaigns. Furthermore, it has established local antennas and regularly works in synergy with other women mediator networks in the context of the Global Alliance of Regional Women Mediator Networks, of which it is one of the founding members. As of June 2020, the MWMN Secretariat, under the responsibility of WIIS Italy, coordinates the Secretariat of the Global Alliance.
